Bahrain wins top award at GCC theatre festival for persons with disabilities

Bahrain, represented by the Ministry of Social Development, secured first place for best theatrical performance at the 7th GCC Theatre Festival for Persons with Disabilities, held in Qatar to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The event was organised by Qatar's Ministry of Social Development and Family in collaboration with the GCC Council of Ministers of Labour and Social Affairs. Osama bin Saleh Al Alawi, Minister of Social Development, hailed the achievement as a reflection of Bahrain's outstanding artistic talents and affirmed the ministry's dedication to supporting inclusive cultural initiatives. He commended the team's efforts, highlighting their creativity and teamwork, and underscored the importance of such events in showcasing the abilities of persons with disabilities across the GCC. The Bahraini play, “Dubbi's Trial”, presented by Al Bayraq Theatre Group, featured 18 participants, including individuals with disabilities and professional artists. It won the top prize, with jury awards for best decor and scenography, and special recognition for actors Abdulaziz Al Hamri, Haya Faisal, and Hamda Mohammed. Bahrain also received the Innovation and Excellence Award for the Samou initiative, led by the Good Word Society, and recognition for Ayoub Rahma Asad’s creative contributions supporting persons with disabilities. Sadiq Ali Sahwan, Director of Social Rehabilitation and head of Bahrain’s delegation, noted that the performance highlighted social inclusion and cultural engagement. He emphasised the ministry’s commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities and integrating their talents into the cultural scene. The biennial GCC Theatre Festival provides a platform for promoting inclusivity, raising awareness of the capabilities of persons with disabilities, and encouraging creative expression through theatre.
