Under the potronage of H.E. Mr. Osama bin Ahmed Khalaf Al-Asfour, Minister of Social Development and Chairman of the Supreme Committee for the Care of Disabled, the Ministry of Social Development organized a ceremony and exhibition on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities entitled “Towards Empowering Persons with Disabilities,” with the participation of members of the committee and a number of private and civil society organizations and personalities. In a statement by H.E. the Minister of Social Development, he stressed that the Kingdom of Bahrain has achieved many achievements at the international level in the field of supporting the rights of disabled, which placed it among the leading countries in meeting the rights of this group, referring in this context to the executive plan for the National Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. For the next five years, which were formulated according to the approach of effective partnership for all relevant governmental bodies and civil society organizations, to implement their initiatives in various legislative, health, educational, rehabilitation, social and awareness fields, in order to ensure the achievement of development cooperation and the active participation of institutions and people with disabilities, to empower them and integrate them into society. He explained that the Kingdom’s celebration every year on December 3rd of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities comes within the framework of the official and societal keenness that this event constitute an annual occasion to highlight the priorities of people with disabilities, enhance their rights and overcome the challenges they face, as well as encourage all governmental and private bodies and institutions. In particular, to provide support and enhance means of support, rehabilitation and empowerment aimed at playing an effective and positive role in the process of comprehensive and sustainable social and economic development. He said that the Ministry of Social Development is keen to consolidate coordination with various relevant sectors to implement a package of different services and programs, with the aim of expanding the scope of rehabilitation services provided to this category, and ensuring the effective empowerment of institutions working in the field of rehabilitation. The Ministry also provides an integrated package of care, rehabilitation and academic services. Professional, social, psychological and health care for people with disabilities of various categories of disability, and meeting their needs through the rehabilitation homes and centers affiliated with it, in addition to the services provided by the Ministry in terms of licensing and supervision of private and private rehabilitation centers and community partnership programmes, with the aim of developing social and rehabilitative integration services and achieving support and advancement of this category in accordance with Principles of justice, equality and equal opportunities. The ceremony included a number of awareness and entertainment segments, an artistic presentation by participants, and competitions, in addition to introductory segments about the services provided by the Ministry to people with disabilities.
