“DarAl Aman” Abused Women Shelter was established on 23/11/2006. It is a governmental social care institution affiliated to the Ministry of Labour & Social Development, Department of Social Welfare. The Home provides protection for women and their children who are exposed to violence or abuse either by their families or by the surrounding environment. It looks after both the Bahraini and non-Bahraini citizens.

 

 

Objectives:

  1. To provide accommodation for women and minors exposed to family and social violence
  2. To provide the necessary care and rehabilitation services for Bahraini and non-Bahraini women who are exposed to family and social violence in order to rebuild their personalities and ensure their proper adaptation and integration in the society.
  3. To follow up the cases that are returned to their families to ensure that they are not exposed to family and social violence, and make sure of their adaptation in their family and society surroundings.
  4.  To work on rehabilitating the families in which women are exposed to any kind of abuse.
  5.  To work on raising community awareness and highlight this problem in order to provide the required protection.
  6.  To coordinate with the different concerned official, civil and private bodies to resolve the problem faced by this category, facilitate the procedures to accommodate them, and provide them with the required protection.
  7.  To prepare and implement the required legislation and laws for the protection of women exposed to abuse.
  8. To provide different types of living, social, health, psychological and recreational services for this category.
  9. To coordinate with the concerned official bodies to finish the procedures to accommodate or rehabilitate foreign women.
  10. To conduct field researches and studies to know the size of this problem, and to identify its causes and the ways to resolve it, in coordination with the concerned bodies.
  11. To dedicate a hotline to provide prompt counselling services for women exposed to family and social violence.
  12. To build up a database to determine the size of the problem and follow up cases.

 

 

Types of Care and Accommodation at the Home:

1.Temporary Care: To accommodate the cases whose circumstances do not allow them to return to their families as their lives might be endangered. They are accommodated until their rehabilitation is completed and they become able to live independently and rely upon themselves. This type of care extends for eight weeks and it can be extended for additional period.

2. Emergency Care: It means that the cases join the Home for a limited period until completing the procedures for discharging them.

3.  Family Care: It means that the Home follows up the cases in the families or after the cases are returned to the families to ensure that no harm or abuse may be caused to them.

Admission Conditions

The case is admitted in the Home provided that the following conditions are met:

  1. The case must be free from contagious diseases or mental disorder
  2. The social research and the medical and psychological examination should prove that the case was exposed to physical, psychological or material harm by others. Also, the research should prove that the case cannot be left with the family until its condition is rectified.
  3. The case should be interested in benefiting from the Home services.
  4. For household female workers, in addition to the above procedures, they must be referred to police stations.

 

Admission Procedures:

  1. To submit an application to join the Home by the case or by any official, civil or private body. Applications may also be submitted by the case’s relatives and friends.
  2. To complete the housing procedures by the Ministry of Interior and its competent departments.
  3. To obtain the approval of the person who is legally responsible for the case or that of the competent security bodies with respect to housing in the Home.
  4. To conduct social, psychological and legal research to evaluate the case’s condition.
  5. To prepare medical and social files for the case.
  6.
